We're at École des Mines de Saint-Étienne. We started building Lock-IN between two exams. Not to raise funding, but to fix our own problem.
During exam season, we were scrolling more than we were studying 😅
At École des Mines, the coursework is intense. You really can't afford to get distracted. And yet social media, YouTube, notifications — we kept going back to them, even when we genuinely wanted to work.
We're 22, and we tried everything: focus mode, blocking apps, timers. All of it could be switched off in three taps. Willpower is no match for an algorithm built to hook you.
So we came at the problem from a different angle: what if unlocking took physical effort? An object in another room that you have to go and get before you can use your phone again?

The first prototypes
Designing the first Lock, running 3D-printing tests in the school's FabLab. Work on the Lock-IN app started at the same time.
The first feedback
We handed the first boxes to friends, classmates, a few parents. The verdict was clear: the physical gesture really does change something in your head.
