Yes, the app works on its own and it's free. The box adds the one thing software can't: a lock you can't undo yourself in a moment of weakness.
No. Lock-IN blocks access to the apps you chose — it doesn't read your messages and doesn't spy on your browsing. The same goes for parental mode, which manages blocks remotely without accessing the child's private content.
On iPhone and on Android. For the box, you need a phone with NFC — which is the case for almost every recent smartphone. The box has no battery and never needs charging: it's a passive chip, so it works indefinitely.
