"He can't stay focused on an exercise for ten minutes, but he can scroll for three hours straight." If you live with ADHD — or you're raising a teen who does — that line hits home. Do screens cause ADHD?

No. No serious study shows that. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a strong genetic component, described in the medical literature long before the smartphone was invented, and it affects roughly 7.2% of children worldwide. You don't develop ADHD from watching TikTok.

What the research does converge on, though, are two far less reassuring findings:

  • heavy screen use is linked to worsening symptoms — especially inattention and impulsivity;
  • people prone to ADHD are especially drawn to this kind of content, because it delivers strong stimulation for almost no effort.

2,587 high-schoolers followed for 2 years (JAMA, 2018)

It's the most-cited study in the field. Researchers followed 2,587 American high-schoolers aged 15-16, all with no ADHD symptoms at the start, for 24 months. The result is striking: among students who reported 14 high-frequency digital activities (social media, streaming, messaging… "several times a day"), 10.5% showed ADHD symptoms two years later, versus 4.6% among those with no high-frequency use. More than double. Each additional high-intensity digital activity raised the risk by about 11%.

4,000 young people followed for 5 years (CHU Sainte-Justine, 2023)

A team led by Professor Patricia Conrod followed nearly 4,000 young people over five years. The conclusion: screen time is directly linked to a worsening of ADHD symptoms — but not just any screen. Social media, television and video games are the culprits; plain computer use, on the other hand, was linked to nothing. So the problem isn't "the screen," it's the format: infinite scroll, instant reward, constant novelty.

1. Make distraction costly, not forbidden

The principle that changes everything: don't rely on willpower, add friction. A phone in another room takes a conscious effort to go get — and that effort is enough to wake up the part of the brain that makes decisions. A phone on your desk, even face down, takes nothing at all.

2. Block before, not during

The decision "I'm not looking at my phone" has to be made before the session, not in the moment of temptation, where you lose every time.
